Still Life – Acrylic on Canvas
(0.5m x 0.6m)
In a self contained world autumn leaves turn slowly catching and reflecting the light and interacting with glass and water. Whilst some leaves break the surface most hang in the water below bringing to mind the old adage that 90% of and iceberg lies beneath the surface (and so it is in life). Here the leaves have the illusion of movement as they slowly turn, creating their own unique forms that dance within the confines of the space.
The overall effect is one of positive reflection. An opportunity to step back from the day to day and to embrace life as it is and the truth that beneath the surface of our lives are hidden depths filled with love and loss.
The inspiration for this painting lies buried within my subconscious but the composition developed from the fabric, leaves and vase I had available. Working with the same forms you can see in my painting “The Mystery” the challenge was to to invoke a different atmosphere and feeling, largely through the manipulation of the objects and by changing the lighting and viewpoint.
From a technical point of view it proved a challenge to accurately capture not only the unique refraction created by the glass and the water but also the translucence of the light passing through the leaves.
My hope is that this painting will provide many hours of comfort, reflection and contemplation, and will become a cherished item in your home.
It was certainly a pleasure (and a challenge) to paint!
