Still Life – Acrylic on Canvas – (0.5mx0.6m)
A well-lit table forms a stage upon which are scattered autumn leaves ranging from green, to yellow, to deep red. Some leaves cover each other forming a central focus, while towards the edges leaves hang ready to fall. The arrangement of leaves appears to be random, however a closer inspection hints to a more considered placement both in form and colour.
This piece, like others in the series (The Mystery, What Lies Beneath), explores ideas of mortality and the passage of time. The autumnal theme is redolent of the changing seasons and has been traditionally linked with ideas of balance and letting go. To this end the leaves hanging precipitously mirror both an actual and metaphorical fall.
The overall effect serves as a reminder that from chaos comes order and an invitation of acceptance.
This piece developed from an idea I had as I explored the materials in which I left as much as possible to chance, dropping the leaves and seeing where the results took me. In this case in was the subtlety of the forms and the fragility of the set up that, combined with the colours and textures, peaked my interest.
My hope is that you enjoy the balance between the free and the precise and that it becomes a source of continued speculation and enjoyment.
